Phil Lynott - Old town

A classic Dublin music video: Phil Lynott – Old Town (1982)

It’s one of those great Dublin pub quiz questions. What links the bandstand in Herbert Park and the Long Hall on South Great George’s Street?

Well, both feature heavily in the video to Phill Lynott’s classic 1982 single Old Town. The video was produced by Dave Heffernan and stars the actress Fiona McKenna.

The Dublin locations are as follows:

- Opening scene on Ha’Penny bridge
- Ringsend
- Grafton Street
- The Long Hall
- Bandstand (Herbert Park)
- Ringsend Pier

Mary: So … then I was there for about three years and then I moved to the job I’m at now and I’ve been there for about six months now… Oh, sorry! Oh, I’m so sorry, I know this is our first date, I must be boring you to tears.
First Partner: Oh no, no, no, please.
Mary: It’s just … I don’t know, I’ve not had a lot of luck with men. They always seem to leave me.
First Partner: A pretty girl like you? Why?
Mary: I don’t know, maybe I’m too clingy… It’s just…whenever I start to get close to somebody, that’s it, he’s off.
First Partner: That’s terrible!
Mary: I know. Because it makes you feel you can never really open up to someone because as soon as you do …
BEEP. CHANGE PARTNERS, PLEASE
Mary (crying): Harry, Harry, I’m …
Second Partner: Hi! I’m Richard.
Mary: Mary
Richard: Mary! Hello! Richard Young. We were at school together.
Mary: Oh my God! How are you? You look fantastic.
Richard: Thanks. You know, you probably don’t know this, but I always had a massive crush on you back then.
Mary: Really? I always liked you too, I just never had the courage to say anything.
Richard: Why? I never thought I’d have a chance to tell you that.
Mary: Me neither.
Richard: Listen. Why don’t we get out of here and go for a drink?
Mary: Oh Richard! I think that that would …
BEEP: CHANGE PARTNERS, PLEASE
Mary: Richard, Richard, wait… (Third Partner arrives) Listen, I know we don’t have much time, and I know we’ve only just met and I don’t want you to be scared of me, you know, it’s just I have this thing where I scare men away but I’m not really like that, you see, I’m nice and I’m kind, I just want someone who I can open up to, who won’t be afraid when I do, do you understand? Because as soon as I start getting closer to somebody, they run away or they disappear. It’s not that I’m needy or clingy, it’s just I want to be able to share my emotions, you know, and I think that we, you and I, we’ve established a connection here, haven’t we? And I think if we gave this a chance, this could be something really special because I don’t think I’ve felt love about someone before, and I think I love you and maybe you can love me too if you gave it a chance to get to know me.
BEEP. AND THAT’S THE END OF OUR SESSION
Third Partner: Sorry? Could I…
Mary: Yes.
Third Partner: Can I ask you something?
Mary: Yes.
Third Partner: Do you know the name of that red-haired over there?
Mary: No, no, I don’t, no.
BEEP: SEE YOU NEXT WEEK, MARY

Sex and the city - Speed dating

SCRIPT
For Miranda, the only thing worse than being Charlotte's 34-year-old bridesmaid was being a 34-year-old bridesmaid without a date. With the wedding less than a week away, Miranda fell prey to the siren song of a New York singles event: Multi-dating.
$20 bought you seven mini-dates, each eight minutes long which incidentally is about as long as blind dates should be.

- Obrigado. What about you, Mandy?

The League of Gentlemen - Attachments dating agency

OLIVE: So…caring, considerate, good looking. Is this what you are or what you want?
IAN: It’s what I want.
OLIVE: Right…I was going to say, good looking? OK, my name’s Olive and it’s my job to build up a profile of you and then match it to a suitable lady from our extensive files. So question one – are you very kind, kind, fairly kind or not at all kind to animals?
IAN: Sorry?
OLIVE: Are you very kind, kind, fairly kind or not at all kind to animals?
IAN: I can’t really say.
OLIVE: So, not at all kind to animals.
IAN: Well don’t put that!
OLIVE: I’ve got to take your first answer. Are you quiet?
IAN: When?
OLIVE: In general.
IAN: Sometimes…
OLIVE: So…quiet.
IAN: Well, do you have to put that?
OLIVE: Well, we need ally your bad points as well, you know.
IAN: Well that’s not so much of a bad point, is it?
OLIVE: You say that but you can’t get a girlfriend, can you? Let me explain a little bit about how a dating agency works. 95% of the people who come in here are weirdos. In fact, my boyfriend doesn’t like me working here. It’s not that he’s jealous – I tell him, “you see the state of them!” No, he just thinks it’s depressing for me.
IAN: Did you meet him through an agency?
OLIVE: God, no! I shall tell him that tonight in bed. He’ll laugh! No, we met at a friend’s party. You see, you meet people through people. And that’s what a lot of them haven’t got – friends. And ultimately, you have to question that, don’t you? Anyway, listen to me wittering on. Let’s get you paired up! Miracles can happen, you know! So how confident are you on a scale of one to ten? Ten being very confident.
IAN: Five...Two.
OLIVE: Are you single, married, divorced, widowed or separated? Single, obviously. Now do you want a physical relationship? Ian, I have to ask this, because frankly some of our ladies are not capable of blowing up a paper bag! Never mind the other!
IAN: Yes.
OLIVE: Yes, you are or you aren’t?
IAN: I am.
OLIVE: Ooh, it’s like “Cracker”, this! “Why did you force her, why did you force her?”
IAN: I DIDN’T FORCE HER! …I didn’t force her…
OLIVE: OK, Ian, we’ll put this into the computer and if we get a match we’ll let you know, OK?
IAN: Olive? Do you think, if – IF you didn’t have a boyfriend, one day you and me…
OLIVE: No.

Queen - I want to break free

The music video of I want to break free was a parody of the northern British soap opera Coronation Street. During part of the video, the band members dressed in drag (as women), as similar characters found in that TV series at the time.

The video also depicted the band in a coal mine in their normal look, and it also features a ballet piece with the Royal Ballet, for which Freddie Mercury shaved his trademark moustache to portray Nijinsky (though he had kept it for the parody part of the video).

According to Brian May in an interview about Queen's Greatest Hits, the video ruined the band in America, where many people - unlike the case in the UK - didn't see the soap-opera connection and interpreted the video as an open declaration of transvestitism and Mercury’s homosexuality.
